The growth and initiation of rambutan fruit are influenced by the climate. This crop grows well in the area 0-250 meters above sea level, and requires optimum temperature of 22-35º C with an average rainfall of 2000-3000 mm per year.

The peak season of Rambutan occurs in December – February. The production center of Rambutan are located in Aceh Besar (Nangroe Aceh Darusalam) , Deli Serdang, Langkat (North Sumatra), Blitar, Kediri, Jember, Banyuwangi (East Java), Bogor, Subang (West Java).

There have been 11 released superior varieties of Rambutan, Including, Binjai, Rapiah, and Lebak Bulus.
